When you work as a 1099 subcontractor — in the trades, on job sites, or as a self-employed pro — no one withholds your taxes for you. That's both the opportunity and the trap. You keep more of each check up front, but the IRS still expects its share, usually four times a year, and the bill at tax time can be brutal if no one's been planning for it.

Two things sink subcontractors: not setting money aside for quarterly estimated taxes, and not tracking expenses, so they pay tax on far more than they actually netted. Mileage, tools, materials, phone, a portion of the truck — those add up to real money, but only if they're documented.

We handle the whole picture for you: clean bookkeeping, quarterly estimates so there are no April surprises, and a return that captures every legitimate deduction. And if the IRS ever questions anything, we're a licensed Enrolled Agent and can deal with them on your behalf.

Common questions

How much should I set aside for taxes from each check?

It depends on your income and expenses, but many subcontractors set aside a meaningful share of each payment for federal taxes. We'll calculate a number that fits your actual situation instead of a generic rule of thumb.

Do I really have to pay taxes four times a year?

If you expect to owe a meaningful amount, the IRS generally wants quarterly estimated payments, and underpaying can trigger penalties. We handle the math and the schedule for you.

What can I actually deduct?

Legitimate business costs — mileage or vehicle expenses, tools, materials, equipment, part of your phone, and more. The key is documentation. We make sure you're capturing what you're entitled to without crossing any lines.

Should I become an LLC or S-corp?

At a certain income level, changing your structure can reduce what you pay — but it's not right for everyone. We'll tell you honestly whether it makes sense for you yet.

I haven't kept any records. Can you still help?

Yes. We'll help you reconstruct what we can and set up something simple going forward so next year is far easier.
